Ed. attributes such as resilience and flexibility!  Well done on your  hard work. mostly online,  and managing to complete the Global Teacher Award.   Below we showcase some of your work and we hope that others will be inspired by your projects and the work of your second level pupils.

Saskia Lassmann

We start with the work of Saskia Lassmann and her students.

Here is Saskia’s lesson plan: 9.3.2020 ID EST lesson with reflection

Here you will find a presentation she made with her

students on the theme of forced migration :  migration

Below you can take a look at the creative work of her students.

Emma Ryan

Emma provides us with a series of lesson plans which she developed for her class placement work, on a range of Development Education themes.  Emma teaches Art and Crafts and these lesson plans show how DE and Art can merge together to create collaborative, creative and critically thinking classrooms.

Erin Brightwood

Erin looks at the impact of COVID-19 on education.  Covid, she says has shone a light on areas of inequality in the education system. In this lesson students reflect on their learning experiences during covid and discuss learning experiences in a range of contexts. Students  consider the impact of privilege in education and create their own privilege walk.

This lesson is designed for a TY group but could be adapted to suit any group of second level students. Differentiation would vary depending on the group and student’s needs.

The plan is for one 80 minute lesson or 2×40 minute lessons. Timings are a rough guide only and flexibility should be allowed for student discussion and interest.

Below is a lesson plan and a powerpoint presentation:

Dori O’Connell

Doris’ lesson plan below is on the theme of  migration, forced migration and refugee status.  Her objectives for the lesson were that students would be familiar with the terminology around migration/displacement etc and following the lesson that they would have a strong understanding of the diverse nature of the group of people labeled as displaced. Students, she hopes, will also become familiar with the difficulties certain displacement causes for different population and how it is effecting both the people moving and the people hosting. They will have the chance to form an opinion about the the topic at the start of the lesson and they will also have the chance to revisit this and possibly form an informed view regarding displacement.

Kerryanne Shortland

Kerryanne’s work on equality is shows how Development Education can be introduced to the second level English classroom.  Here we find some prose and poetry which her students have written.

Here is Ella Manning taking action in true Global Citizenship style and writing to world leaders….

To all world leaders,

My name is Ella Manning and I am from Bandon, County Cork, Ireland. I am writing this letter to all of you to let you know that in my opinion on the Rights people and children have to clean water and sanitation, as it is a vital part of our lives. If children have safe drinking water, they will be able to avoid deadly diseases. Globally 4.5 Billion people do not have access to safe drinking water or sanitation. Approximately 1.8 Billion people in the world use a source of drinking water that is faecally contaminated. I feel very strongly about this issue. Water scarcity affects more than forty percent of the global population. The water supply for each person in the world should be sufficient. The World Health Organization says, about 100 liters per person a day would be enough to meet the basic needs. The water that is required for everyone should be safe therefore free from micro-organisms, chemical substances and radiological hazards that have a threat on person’s health. Everyone has the right to a water and sanitation service that is physically accessible within the household. The water should be an acceptable colour, odour and taste for each person. Water and water facilities and services must be affordable for all. The United Nations Development Group goal is to ensure that in fifteen years that all human beings will have access to clean water. If you ask me nothing has been done to improve in this problem. Are there systems in place to focus on the areas that need attention? It is my opinion that somebody or some group needs to be held accountable. My dad is a farmer and if he did not provide clean water and appropriate sanitation for his livestock he would be imprisoned, and people are expected to drink contaminated water. I would be grateful if you would highlight this issue at your next meeting.

Thanking you in advance,

Ella Manning.
